The EDBA has received an update from the City of Edmonton. Please see the following message below from the Joint Use Agreement (JUA) Steering Committee:

The JUA steering committee recently met to discuss after hours community access to school space for the 2021/22 school year. The committee has agreed that we will move forward with a cautious approach with respect to the re-opening of community access to school spaces. Respective school jurisdictions are entering the school year with new protocols in place; consequently, each jurisdiction will take the first month of the school year to monitor the efficacy of these protocols in creating a safe space for our students and the public.

Alberta Health Services has indicated they will be providing further direction on September 27th; once the announcement is made, the JUA steering committee will respond accordingly. If no restrictions to public gatherings or public health regulations are introduced on September 27th, the JUA will work diligently to resume after hours community access. Due to operational and logistical obligations, approximately 30 days are required to place the appropriate supports and resources in place to safely activate maximum access for community users. As a result, community access to schools may resume on November 1, 2021.

Conversely, if health restrictions are introduced on September 27th, the JUA steering committee will reconvene to discuss the implications of the added restrictions and the establishment of an alternate community access start date. The JUA steering committee and respective Boards look forward to welcoming our communities back and supporting active lifestyles for the citizens of Edmonton.

Over the summer, IBC had secured gyms for the 2020-2021 season. Although school resumed, our bookings were suspended temporarily until further notice. We were told that community use of school gymnasiums would be reviewed in October.

The review has occurred and today the City announced that the temporary hold on community access to school facilities has been extended to January 1, 2021. It is believed that this extension is in the best interest of public wellbeing and it aligns with the current health context. Another update is expected in December 2020.

That said, the IBC season will remain on hold until further notice. Please take care.

This information will be updated in the near future as new information becomes available.

As announced on Sunday, March 15 and effective immediately, the Province of Alberta has canceled all classes at K-12 schools until further notice.  This does apply to all Gymnasium Joint Use Bookings.

Therefore all gym bookings in City of Edmonton facilities or school facilities are cancelled until further notice.
